How Hutchesons’ moved from Additional Support for Learning (ASfL) policy to practice, and from practice to sustainability.
The problem: a policy alone wasn’t enough
Hutchesons’ wanted a clearer, more inclusive approach to Additional Support for Learning. The challenge wasn’t commitment. It was giving Primary and Secondary staff a shared way to identify, record and support needs.
The stakes: inconsistency affects pupils and staff
Without a shared process, support depended on who noticed a concern and what they did next:
- Inconsistent support for pupils
- Uncertainty for staff
- Patchy use of systems like iSAMS
The eureka: the system was the real fix
Rewriting the policy was only step one. The real work connected policy, practice, language and monitoring:
- Clearer processes
- Primary and Secondary guidance
- Staff development
- Ongoing review of practice
The resolution: from rollout to something that lasts
Over two years, Hutchesons’ built a more consistent approach: clearer expectations, practical guidance and stronger ways to check it was working. By year two, the question had shifted from “how do we introduce this?” to “what’s embedded, and how do we keep it that way?”
